Oils - landscapes

I spent many years working in ceramics,
but I am so pleased now to be working in so many media - and not least in oils.

Font Calda is an old monastery in the Southern part of Catalonia, near to Gandesa. It takes its name from the warm spring which bubbles up from the centre of the earth. It took us most of the day to walk there. One day I should like to continue from there to the sea, as the footpath winds all the way through those spectacular mountains.

As I approached, the glimpse of the buildings through the pine trees reminded me of the many paintings that Cézanne had made of Chateaux Noir.

Nestling in the valley near Llangollen, the remains of this old abbey were also drawn by Turner.

I really feel pleased about the overall style and the qualities of this picture.

The crows are quick to find the victim of winter for all else is blanketed in white. But I think that people don't like to see the crows feeding on lambs - which does happen, of course.

I was so impressed by these buildings near to Burford in the South of Shropshire that I did this oil, as well as the pen and ink drawing that's included in my book, "Maggie Humphry's Shropshire". I cannot decide which I like more, the oil or the drawing.

Over the years I viewed the filigree iron bridge from my window near Eyarth Hir in the Clwyd Valley, near to Ruthin. Swathed in honeysuckle and cow parsley in summer, and frozen with frosts and snow in winter. Horses always standing.

Mother Earth was there long before a Christian Church was set upon this hill in delightful Sheinton (not far from Much Wenlock), the marguerites tumbling down her thighs.
