Aims

  • To demonstrate and explore the various aspects of perspective in drawing and painting
  • To develop and improve participants' skills of both observation and creation
  • Understand how to interpret three-dimensional views on a two-dimensional surface
  • Learn how to use personal judgment and observation, rather than photos

Workshop outline


Day 1

  • Introduction to workshop.
  • A closer look at how perspective has been used in art throughout the ages
  • Some links between perspective in art, psychology, and visual illusion
  • Applying some of these elements to participants' own drawings
  • Completion of perspective drawing exercises

Day 2

  • Sketching outside and around the area (weather permitting)
  • Creation of a finished perspective drawing or painting based on previous work
  • Discussion of work

Materials & equipment required

  • Large sketchbook (Maggie has some thick, good A3 sketchbooks for sale at £8 each)
  • Lots of drawing paper
  • Pencils
  • Charcoal
  • Stool or chair (for outside work)
  • Paints (any type that you normally use)
  • 2 large cardboard boxes to create a structure (you decide what large means)
